First Incorporated in April of 1973, The Merritt Island Executive Council is a non-profit Council consisting of individual Incorporated non-profit Homeowner Organizations on Merritt Island, Florida. Our Florida State registered Charter Number is 726598. SPECIAL NOTE: MIEC now includes Merritt Island businesses and Non-Profits as sponsor/members in our organization. We encourage the support of these businesses as they join us in meeting our goals of making important contributions to Merritt Island in the form of assorted projects and dealing with issues that may be of importance to all of us. For an APPLICATION, write to MIECHOA@aol.com and one will be sent to you. Annual dues for Businesses and Non-Profits is $35. Mission Statement "Our Mission is to give each participating member/business/organization the advantage of a unified voice in dealing with problems that are unique to our community." We do this by listening to what the residents tell us as to how they feel about particular issues and seek assistance from the Board of County Commissioners or other Brevard County Departments or State Agencies. Representatives of the member HOA organizations or designated "Honorary" members may attend our monthly meetings. Business owners or their representatives as well as that of member organizations, may also attend. All Merritt Island residents can send an e-mail, write or fax us with their questions, concerns or solutions regarding assorted issues. The monthly meetings are essentially for the purpose of presenting a forum for such discussions, however, many times we gather to discuss the status of any number of projects that we may have going on, as well. The Council is also interested in promoting Merritt Island and all it has to offer, with particular emphasis on our largest employer, Kennedy Space Center. To that end, the former District 2 County Commissioner, Ron Pritchard, in conjunction with this Executive Council, conducted a successful contest for the residents of the community to participate in selecting a slogan and design logo for all of Merritt Island to identify with. The winning slogan was "Merritt Island, Where Dreams are Launched". The logo can be found at the top left corner of this page. Since that time, 4 large signs have been made and installed at entrances to Merritt Island, from all directions. The project was totally supported by the community in that all expenses involved were paid for by donations from businesses and individuals all over the Island. Landscaping money has also been set aside for maintenance purposes. The Executive Council then decided to do further promotion using the slogan and logo and has gone to local businesses to manufacture other items bearing the slogan and/or logo. The T-shirts and Polo shirts, as well as a Space Shuttle Novelty pens, can be purchased through the Executive Council or by going directly to SPACESHIRTS on SR 3 on North M.I. (6116 N.Courtenay Pkwy. 453-7453) Other items are Ballcaps, Visors, Refrigerator magnets, stationery, such as return address labels, notecards, and letterhead, to name a few examples, and these can be ordered from MERRITT ISLAND PRINTING CO., also on SR 3 on North M.I. (3585 N. Courtenay Pkwy, 452-9922) The NEWEST MERCHANDISE available are the beautiful license plate tags fashioned after the "Welcome" Sign design. The Company who makes these for us is AIRSTRIKE, INC. (new phone number: 406-0847), and new location in PSJ. MIEC sold the last of the first order of Logo tags in Dec. 07 and we have now purchased the latest METAL PLATES that this company makes. The LOGO tags are as colorful and well done as the first run and may last even longer in the Florida weather conditions. Mine is over 4 years old and looks like NEW. (The trick may be to place a plastic protective cover over it, as that is what I have.) We also have matching keyrings made by the same company. AS YOU DRIVE AROUND THE ISLAND, you may notice that there are "MERRITT ISLAND LOGO" LICENSE PLATES on many of the Police/Sheriff's Squad cars. This is because Sgt. Paul Chalko came to one of our meetings and inquired about having the tags put on all 50 of the Sheriff's cars for this area. He advised that SHERIFF JACK PARKER thought it was a great idea to do so. Only one problem.....it was not in their budget. We quickly pulled the project together with the help of generous local businesses and individuals, raised the needed $750 to give to Sheriff Parker and his officers. So, if the Sheriff's car has the M.I. tag on the front, it is one of our own. If not, it is from another area of Brevard or different county. ANOTHER SIGN of the PRIDE we are all trying to display and the difference we are making in our community. ALL OF THE SLOGAN AND LOGO Merchandise can be purchased thru the MIEC or you can go directly to the businesses who make the products and purchase from them. While visiting these businesses, you will see many more items that may be of interest to you. Also in concert with Commissioner Pritchard and his staff, a news page devoted to Merritt Island, aptly called "MERRITT ISLAND NEWS AND VIEWS" was created and had it's first issue in the Florida Today, Communities Section, on May 21st, 2003. The MIEC President contributed by writing an article entitled "OPERATION...MERRITT ISLAND PRIDE" from that first issue through November, 2006. Unfortunately, the flavor of the page changed dramatically with the next Commissioner in December, 2006, and that column was discontinued without notice. We lost our ability to discuss issues, notify the public of important information and share projects with the readers as we enjoyed for nearly 4 years. It should be emphasized the the MIEC is non-partisan and has the spirit and ability to work with any willing County Commissioner and staff as well as other county and State officials on items of interests or concern to our Island residents, organizations and business owners. We look forward to improved communications and cooperation in the future and will keep you advised accordingly. After all, those of us who live here or own a business on the Island, all CARE about how things are done for the benefit of all. We need to be able to work together for the common good. (NOTE: Inserted here in Dec. 2007, we are happy to report that we DID receive complete cooperation from the current District 2 Commission staff when we decided to donate the FIRST EVER OFFICIAL Christmas Tree and decorate it with RED, WHITE and BLUE lights. The tree is located on County property alongside the Welcome Sign at the corner of SR3, just South of the 528 Causeway (Beachline), outside of the County Office Bldg. This tree is dedicated to the dear memory of our former long time Treasurer, Mr. Jim Mundhenk, who recently passed away. MIEC also donated a tree and large pre-lit wreath to the M.I. Public Library. The Director there, Mr. Jeff Thompson, opted to place the tree on the roof of the Library to deter theft or damage. Quite an undertaking with the recent high winds and cold temps, however, not to be deterred, Jeff accomplished the task, even after the tree was blown down twice with the unusual weather conditions. Jeff really got into the spirit and had the determination necessary to make it work. Next year, we hope to make the installation easier for him. It is our desire for the trees to be lasting gifts for many years to come. IT'S OFFICIAL!!: Back on Nov. 1st, 2005, the MIEC received the RESOLUTION making it official that Merritt Island will forever be known as the place "WHERE DREAMS ARE LAUNCHED." All our efforts paid off and we had successfully made our mark in the History books. Thanks to the District 2 Commissioner, Ron Pritchard, his staff, and all the Board members of the Executive Council, and the public who purchased logo merchandise, for making all of this possible. We are EXTREMELY PROUD OF THIS RESOLUTION, which is History in the making since our Island now has it's own special identity. Thanks for your support and let's continue to promote our Island. SPECIAL NOTE: We were able to acquire a 2nd Framed Copy of the Official Resolution and so there is one on display at the M.I. Public Library AND also in the Lobby of the M.I. County Office Complex on Courtenay Pkwy. The Council has a number of Committees that need good people to assist and join in the work we currently do, and we are open to your ideas at any time. Please plan to join us soon!! If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail MIECHOA@aol.com Dues are currently only $15/yr for member HOA's; $35 for Businesses and Organizations. It is a wonderful opportunity to give back to your community and help in the planning of improvements and solutions to problems.
